U.S. Department of Justice Review of School District Elections
July 11, 2018
It has come to our attention that, within the past few days, many school districts throughout New York State have received correspondence from the U.S. Department of Justice regarding whether those school districts are in compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965. In order to help you to identify such correspondence, a redacted copy can be found by clicking here.
Specifically, the U.S. Department of Justice appears to be seeking information concerning whether materials related to school district elections have been translated into Spanish.
Please be aware that our law firm is reaching out to the appropriate persons at the U.S. Department of Justice and we will keep you updated regarding any new information that we receive. In the interim, if your school district receives correspondence from the U.S. Department of Justice, please send it to your contact person at our law firm.
If you have any questions regarding the information in this Information Memo, please contact Candace J. Gomez, Esq. at cgomez@bsk.com, any of the attorneys in our School Districts Practice, or the attorney in the firm with whom you are regularly in contact.
