Trademark and Patent Backlog On the Rise Again

April 9, 2025

By: Jéla M. Paul and Daniel R. Carosa

As a follow-up to this week’s Business in 2025 webinar, Bond intellectual property attorneys Jéla M. Paul and Daniel M. Carosa recorded a brief overview of steps taken in recent months by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to reduce the backlog of applications, such as hiring more personnel and introducing new tools to streamline the process. While these steps had begun to bear fruit in reducing the wait time for some of the 700,000 trademark and patent applications filed in 2024, hiring freezes and other budget-cutting measures ordered by the Trump administration have unwound some of that progress.

Topics covered in today’s webinar:

  • Beating the Wait: Practical Tips to Shorten Patent and Trademark Pendency at the USPTO
  • Employment of Out-of-State Telecommuters by New York State Employers
