Pay equity in faculty salaries is becoming a prominent issue in both private and public institutions. Several states, including New York and New Jersey, have enacted laws that make it more difficult to defend pay equity claims, and some federal courts are interpreting the federal Equal Pay Act more strictly than in pre-vious years. Given the decentralized nature of many salary decisions, institutions may unwittingly be vul-nerable to pay equity lawsuits.
