Sometimes it just hits you. An immediate interest, a revelatory experience, a clear resolve. For Erin Callahan, it was an instant flash of connection from the moment she took a seat in her first labor and employment law class at Seton Hall University.
Unlike other classmates who demonstrated an interest in the various first year law school courses, Erin wasn’t immediately taken by her law studies. But once she found her path, the way was clear.
Looking back, Erin admits that her interest in labor and employment law isn’t all that surprising, as her dad is a Human Resources professional. “I’m drawn to the human nature element of my practice. Work is such an integral part of most people’s lives, so the issues clients have, and the strategies we create to address them, can have a significant professional, and personal, impact on those involved. It’s also the personal nuances of each situation that can matter the most when working through ‘people problems.’”
Working out of Bond’s Abany/Saratoga office, Erin’s clients are primarily private employers; mid-sized businesses to larger corporations, with a few small business owners. Her clients are located throughout the state, particularly north and south of Albany along the Hudson River. Some are multi-state employers.
She defines her practice in terms of counseling and litigation defense, with a focus on the nuances. Erin views herself as part of each client’s team, “I develop trusted relationships with clients by becoming well versed in their individual operations, objectives, and how I can best help them meet their goals while minimizing legal liability.” Her litigation defense approach also seeks to grasp the details of a story, in depth, to best defend clients against claims.
Erin’s team mentality is what drew her to join Bond in 2024. “Bond’s team culture is instrumental, not just for my own professional growth, but for client value. The issues on which we work can be extremely complex and challenging. It’s so critical to have access to a large group of extraordinary attorneys with a wide-range of experiences, and be able to use those prior experiences to provide the best counsel to clients on virtually any issue.”
The largest areas of concern she’s been working on of late are related to the various changes coming out of Washington, D.C. and the impacts on employers in terms of operations and the workplace. Working through employer obligations and questions related to harassment and discrimination allegations, reasonable accommodations, and wage and hour requirements also keep her busy.
“It’s not easy being an employer in New York State. Our state is very employee friendly and statutes and regulations governing employers are plentiful and change frequently. Employers need to be aware of their obligations and establish internal policies, procedures and best practices to meet these requirements.”
A native of Saratoga, Erin is now raising her young family there, benefiting from lifelong and new connections. “Saratoga is home. We are very fortunate to be part of such a great community, filled with a supportive team of family and friends.”
“Building teams in my interactions with others has always served me well. I find that I am the most motivated by collective goals, working and creating a support system with others. Given my stage of life, this is also how I operate (i.e. survive) outside of work while caring for two young children with my husband. Life would be less fulfilling operating in a silo.”
