Marriott to Overhaul Data Security System in FTC Settlement

In this week’s Business in 2024 webinar, Bond litigation attorney Jackson Somes reviewed some of the details of Marriott International’s settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over a series of data breaches spanning 2014 through 2020. During the breaches, information about 339 million customers – including names, unencrypted passport numbers and payment card data – was accessed by hackers. As part of the settlement, Marriott agreed to undertake an extensive upgrade of its data privacy security protocols. In a separate settlement with attorneys general from 49 states and the District of Columbia, Marriott agreed to pay a $52 million fine related to the breaches.
