Eye on Telehealth: OIG Finds that CMS Overpaid Telehealth Practitioners

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently found that many telehealth services were improperly paid due to the failure to meet coverage criteria under Medicare. The great majority of the improper payments were based on billings submitted by non-rural originating sites. The OIG reviewed a small sample of distant-site claims from 2014 and 2015, which accounted for payments of $13,795,384. The full report, which estimated that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) overpaid nearly $3.7 million dollars, contains helpful reminders and resources for both distant and originating sites.
