Bond, Schoeneck & King Attorneys to Present at 2024 National Association of College and University Attorneys Annual Conference

(New York City, NY): Bond, Schoeneck & King will have a large slate of presenters at the upcoming 2024 National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) Annual Conference June 25 through June 29 in Columbus, OH. Over the course of the five-day conference, eight Bond attorneys from five Bond offices will present on a variety of topics.
Attorneys presenting at the conference are:
Mark A. Berman (New York City) is a member of the firm’s cybersecurity and data privacy practice as well as litigation practice. Berman will present “Ask GPT: How Can Lawyers Ethically Use Artificial Intelligence and Avoid Suspension?” and will cover the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on campuses and in the legal field. This session will also discuss how general counsel on campus can utilize AI and how to identify ethical and business considerations when using AI tools and where AI has gone wrong!
Louis P. DiLorenzo (Westchester, NY) is the managing member of Bond’s Westchester office, a co-managing member of Bond’s NYC office and a member of the firm’s higher education practice. His session at the conference, “#TheySaidWhat?: The Ethics of Witness Preparation: Rules to Follow and Pitfalls to Avoid,” will focus on complying with ethical requirements and boundaries while working with witnesses.
Seth F. Gilbertson (Buffalo & NYC) is co-deputy chair of Bond’s higher education practice. He will be presenting and moderating three sessions at this year’s NACUA conference. The first, “International Experiences, Legal Realities: Service Learning and Internships Abroad,” will give an overview of the various types of non-traditional models for experiential and applied learning beyond the scope of traditional exchanges or faculty-led programming and discuss compliance issues including tax implications, foreign labor law insurance and restrictions. Gilbertson’s second session, “Undue Hardships? Understanding Workplace Accommodations Post-Groff,” will discuss the new legal standards for employee religious accommodations, implications for employee disability and pregnancy accommodations and additional considerations under Title IX proposed regulations. His third session, “This is not a Workcation: Mitigating Risk in a Faculty-Led Study Abroad,” will discuss how to anticipate and mitigate risks associated with faculty-led study abroad programs.
Barbara A. Lee, Ph.D. and Shelley Sanders Kehl (New York City) are attorneys in the firm’s higher education practice. They will present “Meet the Faculty” at the NACUA conference during the Lawyers New to Higher Education session which will focus on faculty employment issues such as tenure, contracts, unionization, faculty duties, the first amendment and emerging developments.
Suzanne M. Messer (Syracuse, NY) is Deputy Managing Member of Bond’s Syracuse office, Chair of Bond’s Women's Initiative and a member of the firm’s Litigation Department and its Higher Education Practice Group. Her session, “Accommodations or Alterations? Navigating Student Accessibility,” will focus on the increase in student requests for accommodations post-pandemic and will provide tips for assessing disabilities and reasonable accommodations.
Kyle Skillman (Kansas City, KS) is the deputy managing member in Bond’s Kansas City office and co-chair of the firm’s collegiate sports practice. His session, “NCAA Infractions Update,” will discuss information university counsel need to know during an investigation, preparation for hearings and recent reforms to the infractions process made by the NCAA.
Matthew N. Wells (Syracuse, NY) chairs the firm’s public finance practice. Wells will present “Braving Bonds: What University Counsel Need to Know (Not Fear) about Tax Exempt Bond Financing.” This session will discuss the general counsel’s role in facilitating the transaction, how to protect the institution’s interest and how to mitigate risk.
