THE CAPITAL DISTRICT, located in New York's "Tech Valley", has a total population of approximately 1,142,000. Albany is located on the banks of the Hudson River, and the architectural beauty of the State Capital buildings create an impressive cityscape. In 1992, Albany was designated an All-America city. Saratoga Springs is just 30 miles north of Albany, and has been hailed by The Wall Street Journal as one of the "fastest-growing, wealthiest and most educated areas" in the nation. The Capital Region has excellent educational resources, both public and private. It is home to 17 colleges and universities, as well as the Albany Medical Center College and Hospital. There are many historic sites, with museums and festivals centering around the region's history. Performing arts also play an important role in the area. The Empire Center at "The Egg," nearby Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and Tanglewood Music Center each provide the perfect setting for dance, theater, and music from all over the world. The Saratoga Thoroughbred Race Track provides international caliber thoroughbred racing before one of America's most unique backdrops. The Capital District offers easy access to many lakes, state parks, nearby Vermont ski areas, golfing, and the Adirondack Mountains, as well as a number of major metropolitan centers and the Atlantic Ocean.
